Zlatan Ibile: From Failed Maths Student to Music Milestone

by Andrew Simire

Born Omoniyi Temidayo Raphael on 19 December 1994 in Lagos, Nigeria, Zlatan Ibile started life far from the centre of pop-glamour. His father is a pastor, and in his younger days he played the church drums rather than rapping in studios.

While he had his sights set on university around 2011/2012, poor results in mathematics and accounting prevented him from going. “I was supposed to go to university… but I didn’t have my complete papers,” he said. “When I failed my exam, I started going to the studio with a friend.” That twist of fate propelled him toward music instead.

Soon after, at age 19, he entered a rap competition of 140 contestants and won a car victory. It was a moment he credits with shifting his mindset to take rap seriously. “That moment changed my life,” he said.

Rising Through the Music Ranks

Zlatan’s breakthrough came with the anthem “Zanku (Legwork),” whose accompanying dance move became a viral sensation. “That’s Africa to the world,” he says of the Zanku brand. “There’s no way you’ll mention Zanku without mentioning Zlatan.”

His debut studio album Zanku arrived in 2019 and established his signature sound: street-wise, rhythm-driven, danceable. He continued to produce crowd-pleasers, becoming one of Nigeria’s street-hop flag-bearers.

Among his most popular works are tracks such as “Lagos Anthem”, “Ale Yi” and collaborations with major names in the Afrobeats scene. These songs cemented his reputation among young Nigerian audiences and beyond.

Personal Life & Public Image

Although Zlatan maintains a street-grounded persona, there are personal dimensions often passed over in headlines. Coming from a pastor’s family, his early exposure to church music laid the groundwork for a cultural and musical vocabulary blending faith-roots and street savvy.

He founded the label Zanku Records, positioning himself not only as artist but entrepreneur—tapping into fashion, branding and broader entertainment ventures. His style often ties into his message: success from humble beginnings, resilience, dance, community.

Stepping into Acting and Broader Creative Ventures

Zlatan’s influence isn’t limited to music. He ventured into acting, making appearances such as in the film Gangs of Lagos, expanding his creative footprint beyond just singing and dancing.

Furthermore, his business acumen; through Zanku Records and related brand initiatives, shows a musician thinking beyond the single hit. He’s also shared his time and knowledge with upcoming artists, offering mentorship days including studio time and interactions, proof he views his role as more than performer.

New Album Symbol of Hope – Message, Performance & Meaning

Zlatan’s latest project, the third studio album Symbol of Hope (often abbreviated S.O.H), is a deliberate turn toward inspiration. He revealed in an interview on Apple Music 1 with Nandi Madida that the album is driven by his desire to uplift those from difficult backgrounds. “If I can do it, you can too,” he said.

The album isn’t just another dance collection, it signals Zlatan’s evolution. He still brings the energy, the dance moves, the street-cred, but now with a purposeful message of resilience and hope. For his fans, especially those who’ve followed his journey from “nothing to something”, it resonates deeply.

Why This Matters
