A heated dispute at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja has led to a series of investigations. It also nearly led to a near fatal accident and sanctions for both Fuji music star King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, and the crew of a ValueJet flight.
The altercation, which occurred on August 5, 2025, involved a security breach on the tarmac and a serious disregard for aviation safety protocols.
What Happened
The conflict began when KWAM 1, who was scheduled for a Lagos-bound ValueJet flight, attempted to board with a stainless-steel flask.

According to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), aviation security personnel and airline crew requested to inspect the contents of the flask, suspecting it was an alcoholic beverage.
KWAM 1, in a later statement, claimed the flask contained only water and was needed for a medical condition. However, when he was denied boarding after allegedly refusing to comply with the inspection, the situation escalated dramatically.
Sources confirmed that KWAM 1 proceeded to the tarmac and reportedly stood in the path of the aircraft, attempting to prevent its departure. In a shocking breach of safety regulations, the two ValueJet pilots initiated takeoff procedures while the musician was still in their path, forcing KWAM 1 to duck to safety. If he hadn’t done so as fast as he did, he could have been seriously injured by the moving plane.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has since described this action as “reckless.”
The Official Response and Sanctions On The KWAM 1 Issue
The incident has drawn swift and firm responses from aviation authorities. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, ordered that KWAM 1 be placed on a “no-fly list” for six months, pending a full investigation. The NCAA has also petitioned the Inspector General of Police to investigate and prosecute the musician for his actions.
In a parallel move, the NCAA has suspended the licenses of the two pilots involved and launched a full investigation. ValueJet has also removed the crew from active duty. The airline and the musician have faced criticism for their roles in the incident. Keyamo described the event as a “temporary loss of sanity and control on both sides.”
In a recent development, KWAM 1 issued an apology, expressing his regret over the incident while still maintaining that the flask contained only water. This apology came amidst mounting pressure and public scrutiny.
The investigation is ongoing, and the aviation authorities have made it clear that they will not tolerate any actions that compromise the safety and security of airport operations.
The Actions Of KWAM 1 In The Eyes Of The Law
KWAM 1’s actions are considered to be in violation of Nigerian law and aviation regulations. His alleged act of physically obstructing an aircraft on the tarmac could be classified as a criminal offense.
According to a review of Nigerian law, Section 459A of the Criminal Code Act (which applies to southern states) and Section 472 of the Penal Code Act (for northern states) make it a criminal offense to obstruct, hinder, or impede the movement of an aircraft. A person found guilty of this offense could face up to two years in prison. The NCAA has stated that KWAM 1’s actions were a violation of Nigeria’s civil aviation regulations.

The specific consequences of KWAM 1’s actions, as determined by the authorities, include a six months “no-fly” order issued by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. This means the music icon is barred from flying within Nigeria.
In more recent developments, the order has been determined to last, not just for six months, but pending the time the authorities are done with investigating the issue. This further means that KWAM one could be barred for more or less than six months depending on the duration of the investigation.
The NCAA went further to formally petitione the Attorney General of the Federation and the Inspector General of Police. Their petition was to initiate a “comprehensive criminal investigation” and “appropriate prosecution” against the musician.
They further stated that KWAM 1’s actions endangered ground personnel and other airport users. Also his actions contravened civil aviation regulations and international safety standards.
What People Think Of The KWAM 1 Airport Issue
Many are of mixed feelings regarding the issue. Some are worried that the issue might be swept under the carpet by the authorities. This is because KWAM 1 holds major influence with politicians across the nation. Others also protest the suspension of the license of the pilots. They claim that she did no wrong in enforcing the law. Especially ensuring that one man’s action does not delay and endanger the lives and transportation of others.
There is the group of people who believe that the pilots deserve their licenses being held, because they decided not to handle the issue well. They and the other officials should have cleared KWAM 1 from the runway before initiating take off procedures. Their actions could have been fatal for the music icon. We do not use one wrong to force a right.
Final Words
Whatever the outcome of the investigations, it is imperative to understand that rules are meant to be obeyed. They are for the safety and progress of all. No one should use their influence to contravene these rules. The pilots too should respect the safety and sanctity of human life. They should not endanger a person’s life even if he is in the wrong. We wish all parties justice and closure.
