Adekunle Gold’s Struggle With Sickle Cell

Adekunle Gold openly revealed his struggle with sickle cell in his song 5 Star, released on July 15th, 2022. The first part of the song says it all, you can stream here.

During an interview with Larry Madowo of CNN, after the song “5 Star” was released, he was asked why he decided to speak up. He said he finally found the courage to share his story. He acknowledged that not everyone has the platform or strength to do so.

While writing 5 Star, he was reflecting on his life, journey, and how much of a miracle he truly is. That moment made him realize that it was time to use his voice. He spoke up because people are suffering, dying and many can’t even afford the basics needed to stay alive. Since the international organizations won’t act, he believes it’s time to push them to.

He went further to state that he started the foundation, so you know it’s real. He is constantly learning his voice, doing outreach and fighting for it. With that, he wants the international community to pay attention, just like they do to other diseases. Sickle cell is a big one, it affects his people the most, and he wants the world to do something about it.
