The Metal Works of Nigerian Sculptor Steve Ekpenisi

Steve Ekpenisi, aka The Iron Bender, is a genius when it comes to his craft. The well-known sculptor who works at the Universal Studios of Art in Lagos, has built a strong reputation for his unique metal sculptures.

Using materials like rods and stainless steel, he creates visually striking pieces that have made him a prominent figure in Nigeria’s art scene.

Initially, Steve used discarded metals for his work. However, due to rising costs, he now sources his materials directly from factories. This shift reflects the growing demand for scrap metal, which has become more expensive due to its newfound value among scavengers.

Steve’s love for art began early in his hometown of Abavo, Delta State. As a child, he frequently dismantled household electronics to create makeshift sculptures, much to the frustration of his parents. His formal education at Federal Polytechnic Auchi was a turning point, where he graduated with top honors in sculpture.

His older brother also played a crucial role in steering him towards art. He ignited Steve’s passion for creating by showing him a clay sculpture that he had made. However, when access to clay was limited, Steve turned to cement. He crafted his first sculptures that he soon began selling.

In his current studio, Steve Ekpenisi has a process of mixing physical labor and artistic expression. Working to the sounds of his favorite musicians like Fela Kuti and Tupac Shakur, he molds stubborn metals into graceful, detailed forms. Observers are often amazed at how he handles the difficult process with such energy and precision. Transforming rigid materials into fluid designs. His persistence and creativity have earned him the nickname “Iron Bender,”

Despite the challenges posed by Nigeria’s economy, such as rising costs and inconsistent electricity, the artist remains steadfast in his craft. He advises younger artists to focus on their passion and to remain disciplined. He believes that financial success will come naturally to those who dedicate themselves to their art. For Steve Ekpenisi, it’s not about chasing money but about pursuing excellence in every piece he creates.
