Dragon Harmony: Ghanaian-Chinese New Year Fire Rituals

by Akosua Bonsu

During the Chinese New Year season, the presence of the Chinese community in Ghana, a topic of both curiosity and contention, becomes particularly poignant. This year, as we transition from the year of the rabbit to the year of the dragon, there’s a cautious optimism in the air.

It’s an opportunity to bridge cultural divides and blend the ancient traditions of the Chinese with the rich heritage of Ghana, where fire ceremonies have long been a staple in village life, symbolizing purification, guidance, and community cohesion.

Utilizing the symbolism of endings and new beginnings that the new year represents, let’s explore a ceremony that embodies this spirit of renewal. In this year of the Dragon, we connect with the potent symbolism of fire, drawing on the rich tapestry of Ghanaian village ceremonies, where fire serves as a beacon of purification, guidance, and community renewal. Just as Ghanaian elders unite their communities around the glow of fire to share wisdom and stories, the Chinese community in Ghana integrates these practices to set intentions and embrace new beginnings.

Here are the five steps of the fire ceremony, designed to help you cast away fears, doubts, and regrets, making room for new intentions, goals, and growth:

Set Intention: Begin by reflecting on the past year. Identify what you wish to let go—fears, doubts, regrets—and what you aim to attract into your life in the coming year. This step is about clarity and honesty with oneself.

Prepare Your Space: Use a fire pit, metal bowl, or a pan as your ceremonial centre. Line it with aromatic herbs like rosemary, lavender, sage, thyme, and lemongrass, creating a bed that symbolizes a fresh and fragrant start.

Letting Go and Inviting In: Write down the things you wish to release on one piece of paper, and on another, note what you want to manifest. Burn the first paper, visualizing your fears and doubts disintegrating with the smoke. Then, burn the second, imagining your intentions taking root in the fertile ground left by what you’ve released.

Meditate and Reflect: Spend a few moments in meditation, focusing on your intentions. Visualize achieving your goals, the feelings they bring, and the impact on your life. This step is crucial for internalizing your desires and preparing your mind and spirit for the journey ahead.

Close the Ceremony Safely: Ensure the fire is completely extinguished by adding water. Dispose of the ashes in a way that feels respectful and considerate to the earth. This act symbolizes the final release of the old and a respectful nod to the cycle of renewal.

On this new year, this fire ceremony—a blend of Ghanaian tradition and Chinese symbolism—offers a powerful way to honour our past, celebrate our present, and manifest our future. It’s a reminder that, regardless of where we come from, the desire for renewal, growth, and connection burns brightly within us all. As we embrace the Year of the Dragon, may this ceremony light the path to a year filled with joy, accomplishment, and communal harmony.
