Davido’s Funds: A Mix Of African Heritage, Tunes

by Andrew Simire

Everyone loves nostalgia, they love the feeling of the good old days and Davido comes with a bit of it in this musical masterpiece. Davido’s musical prowess comes out strong, as one of his best, with the African feel, featuring some of Nigeria’s current musical bigwigs including Odumodublvck and songster, Chike.

The song brings the musical prowess of the trio. Davido with his energy, Odumodublvck with is easy rap; capping it all with Chike’s emotionally stirring voice. How Davido’s Funds Resonates With The Nigerian Dream

The title: Funds is one that resonates with every Nigerian youth who wants to make a life for himself. Everyone wants to make some good money, enough funds to buy the world all for himself. It does not just end with getting the money, he’d also want to date the hottest ladies in town. Spend enough of it to buy her loyalty to him. You can feel that need in the song.

Davido, Others Flaunt Wealth In Funds

Davido flaunts his wealth, a characteristic of every Nigerian youth who has finally gotten to that stage in his finances that he is not scared to flaunt it. His lyrics paint that picture perfectly:

Okay (Okay), girl make I show you my bank account

Two face, I get plenty to go around

So girl make you dance when you hear the sound

Na we dey pop all over town

So tell me if you dey down, dey town

Odumodublvck also continues where Davido stops, flaunting his “funds” all the way, telling the lady in question that he’d….

“…Mismanage my funds on you

All I really wanna do is

I’ll mismanage my funds”

Chike goes all out, lover-boy style, wooing his love interest with his words:

“Anyị je bili na Paris, ọ ga-adị kwa mma (We went up to Paris, and it would be great)

If I handle this your body, oga sọ kwú so, oga sọ kwú sọ (talk more, talk more)

If you put me for palava, m je kpọla gi ọfala (I will go and take you ofala)

Nwoke na-eme, nwa bu ife, ego na-ebe hmm (A man acts, a child is a wave, money is born hmm)

Davido’s Funds: The Video

The music video for the song is top notch, with colours blending in to form a subtly dark, classy feeling, exuding wealth and opulence.

The sets also are quite creative from an auction hall to a nightclub and a casino. Davido in the song is enamoured by this lady giving him a run for his money and wealth, beating him at his own game in everything from an auction to the card table. With all the competition, he finally ends up inviting her for a drink, showing her the spirit of sportsmanship and pursuing his interest in such a lady that could best him.

The video is a welcomed break from the normal story of a playboy showering his wealth on an eye candy, buying her things and taking her places.

Davido Embodies The Spirit Of A United Africa in His Song, Funds

As an international act, Davido shows his Africanism, not just including the voices of the Igbo tribe of Nigeria, but going as far as South Africa to sample one of the most popular African musical icons and her music in the song, Drenda Fassie’s Vulindlela. The video also does justice to the Late South African musical icon using her popular headgear as one of the precious items on auction.

Downnsides And Turn Off’s Of Davido’s Funds

One downside is the fact that Odumodublvck’s intro, though cool to him, is incomprehensible and seems like an unnecessary remark than an intro. It comes as a shock to many when they find out that the gibberish many thinks he says actually means: “Black sheep for life, black sheep forever

Izgaaju ’til we kpeme,

Antiworld gangsters

GE records, you get me? ODUMODUBLVCK”

If he really has to put it in, he should probably let the world hear him clearly or better still, go for a shorter, simpler intro. Another turn off is the fact that the song, like many other songs of this era is too short. At 3 minutes, 28 seconds, it is too short for its own good. It literally leaves the listener who has been warming up to the song, in the cold when it abruptly stops.

It would do the singers and music makers of this time good to make their songs a little longer so listeners can enjoy them more. Four to five minutes is ideal, and they should make sure they put in more lyrical content into it instead of letting instrumentals take all the space.

Final Words

In conclusion, Davido’s funds is not a bad one, its already at the top of all the Naija music charts accross steraming platforms. We hope it stays there longer. All in all, its a beautiful piece of musical art.
