Love Palava As Falz Tries To Steal Back Simi In Borrow Me Your Baby Song

by Andrew Simire

When discussing fantasy entertainment love stories in the Nigerian music scene, no duo captures attention than Simi and Falz. Unfortunately, this entertainment couple will never become a real couple. Why, you ask? Here’s why: another entertainer, Adekunle Gold, has already taken Simi.

The Simi-Falz Fantasy Love Dilemma Over The Years

Nigerians were disappointed when they discovered that Simi and Falz were not dating. This was after their release of their first collabo, “Jamb Question,” in 2015. In the song, Simi plays a damsel approached by the inquisitive, stalker-like Falz, who wants to date her. Falz shows up in the most unexpected and uncomfortable places. Set to ask her silly questions in an attempt to gain her attention. That same year, Falz tried again to capture Simi’s attention, this time in his song “Soldier.” Once again, Simi plays the frustrated damsel who rejects Falz’s advances. More so when he presents himself as a macho military man.

To further fan the embers of their fantasy love and entanglement, they jointly released an extended play album titled “Chemistry”. Nigerians believed they were an item as the album cover leaves more to the imagination than it reveals. Despite this, the Falz-Simi fantasy never became a reality. Nigerian fantasy lovers were further shocked when they discovered Simi would marry fellow music star Adekunle Gold in 2019.

Borrow Me Your Baby, Reigniting The Simi-Falz Entanglement

The playful love entanglement seemed to have ended. But Simi decides to rekindle it in her and Falz’s latest track, “Borrow Me Your Baby.” In this song, Falz, as usual, plays the love-sick guy trying to get Simi’s attention. This time, he takes a different approach, asking to borrow her from her husband. The song suggests that Falz, now aware of Simi’s marriage, still can’t give up on her. He tries to persuade her to go out with him, even if only for a day. He further asks Adekunle Gold for permission to borrow his wife for a night to, in his words, “reopen the chapter.”

Simi Relentlessly Plays The Love-Rejecting Damsel

The song comes as another comedic extension of their fantasy, with lyrics that continue to show an unimpressed Simi. She emphatically declares disinterest and warns that her boyfriend (now partner, Adekunle Gold) won’t appreciate Falz’s pursuit. Her words describe this in the song:

“Ki lo fa nonsense (what’s causing this nonsense)

You say you like me

Shey you dey whine me ni?

See picture wey dey for my DP

My boyfriend no go like this thing.”

She reminds Falz of her previous warning about his advances. Furthermore, she emphasizes her lack of interest in his wealth due to her husband’s affluence. Her words perfectly describe her feelings:

“I give you warning why you too dey call me?

You say you want me, but ko really funny

You get money and my baby sef get money.”

Falz Continues Pushing For Love Despite Rejection

Falz responds in his playful rap, letting her boyfriend know that he means no disrespect. But shows that he can’t help wanting Simi for just one night:

“I no disrespect please, I go use my senses (I swear)…

No be fight, I just wan borrow your partner (one time)…

Just a night, if we can reopen that chapter (yeah).”

Falz further explains to Adekunle that they have chemistry (a reference to their fantasy album together). He stresses that she is his first love, and that he misses her terribly:

“…I no need to, whoa

leave talk, you no see the chemistry

She’s my first love, mo de miss e terribly.”

The Music Video: Simple Yet All-encompassing

The accompanying music video is simple and straight to the point, yet entertaining. The scenes unfold in a unisex beauty shop where Simi is attended to. Falz seeks a haircut as an approach. Simi plays the shocked and frustrated damsel, with other female patrons and attendants taking her side against the determined Falz. He goes so far as to snatch Simi’s phone as she video-calls Adekunle Gold, telling him about Falz’s boldness. Falz then explains to the shocked Adekunle his feelings for Simi and how he would love to “borrow” her. Unfortunately for Falz, the group of ladies outsmart him, threatening to close the shop unless he leaves, while mocking him.

The video is rich in colour, with great utilisation of space. The director is successful at packing a story into less than four minutes of visuals.

The Human Side Of The Simi-Falz Love Dilemma

The song goes on to show the struggle of rejected love. This perspective reveals the struggles of a lover who faces rejection from a woman committed to another.

Falz embodies the type of man who keeps fighting to get that love he believes he deserves despite insurmountable odds

Many might advise him to give up, as the lady is already in a relationship. Others will say that he should continue to fight until he wins. All in all, it is better to know when one should stop as things are not working. It is better love someone without insurmountable odds than go dying for one who doesn’t return one’s love.

Last Words

Will Falz ever achieve his dream of driving into the sunset with Simi in their fantasy love dilemma? Let’s see what the future holds while enjoying this comedic work of art.
